Description of Gosaikunda Lakes

Gosaikunda Lakes lies to the north of Kathmandu. The Gosaikunda loop is a quite remote and thinly populated area. Gosaikunda, a glacier lake, is the most famous one with several other glacial lakes adjoining it. Thousands of Hindu pilgrims visit the lakes during the full- moon festival in August. The story that the Hindu people believe is that one of the Supreme Hindu Gods, Lord Shivawas intoxicated by drinking a massive amount of poison and then felt thirsty so he hit the stone with his trident, which created the lakes. In the same place Lake Gosaikunda originates the Hindu people believe that the image of Lord Shiva can be seen in the middle surface of the water. The lake is also sacred to Buddhists. Pilgrims that journey to the lake believe that taking a dip into the lake will clean all their sins.

This is a journey with numerous highlights and boasts stunning views of Ganesh Himal, Manaslu and Annapurna massif mountains as far as you can see. The Tamang and Sherpa people living here physically and culturallyresemble that of the Tibetan people and their unique lifestyle is still thriving under their traditional attitudes and way of life. Their ancestors are believed to have descended from Tibet many centuries ago. Abundant wildlife, intense forest teaming with wild flowers and animal species, adds interest to this trek for nature lovers.
